659 GW of New Generating Capacity Scheduled Worldwide by 2006

Abstract

Projected electric capacity additions worldwide from 1997-2006 are estimated to be 659 gigawatts (GW), according to the latest power plant data base from Utility Data Institute (UOl). An additional 629 GW of power plants with service dates after 2006 or still in the planning stages are also identified.

The fifth annual relea se of UOl's new plant file contains information on 7,430 projected generating units at 3,829 plant sites: these facilities are owned by 705 utilities, 524 industrial autoproducers, 779 pri vate-power companies, and 103 unidentified operators. Some generating un its have service dates out past 2015.
