Abstract

Building Au toma tion Systems (BAS) are closely associat ed with the
hi-tech and comp u ter indu str y. Hi-t ech in d us tries by th eir natur e ar e
und ergoing r apid cha nges, and are c omp etitive. Evolu tion and a highl y
compe titive mark et re sult s in never endin g chan ges to sys tems hardwar e
and sof tware , and cha nges of vend ors' org an izations (and s ometim es of
their ow ne rs) that are m arketing and su p por ting such sys tems.
DOC ma n ufac ture rs in tro d uce new product s, on av erag e, eve ry
five years and produ ct upgr ad es annu ally. DOC sys tems pro vid e a reli-
able hard wa re pl atf orm , so phis tica ted appli cat ion pro gram s, a nd are
" user fri endl y" for ope ra tors an d maint enance.
Build ing ow ne rs- an d users of BAS sys tems - bene fit from the situ-
atio n th rou gh comp et itive p ricing . At the same time, they feel the pre s-
s ure origi na ting from fr equ en t in trod uction of new sys tem s and instabil-
ity of the compa nies bring ing them on the m ark et.

Author Biography

Viktor Boed, CEM Manager, Plant Engineering Departmen t of Facilities & Services Yale University

Viktor Boed , CEM, has a grad uate degree in electrica l en gineering from the Brno Techn ical Unive rsity in the Czech Repub lic. As a cons ulting enginee r he ha s de signed building automa tion systems in Europe an d the Ll.S, and tau ght courses in electrica l engi nee ring at the Brno Techni cal University as well as in Cairo, Egypt. Boed came to the Ll.S. in 1979 and worked as a product manager and a senior research engineer for Johnson Contro ls, Inc. in Milwaukee, WI. He joined Yale Uni versity in 1983 as manager of building automation and became manager of plant enginee ring in 1989, where he is involved today in de sign and implement ation of automation systems for buildings, power plants, maintenance man agement systems, utility metering systems, and a faciliti es rea l-time communica tions netw ork. The Plant Engineering Division also is inv olved in implement ation of ene rgy conserva tion projects, and review and approval of capital projec ts for the un iver sity.

Boed is an active member of the Assoc iation of Ene rgy Eng ineers and sta rted the Connect icut AEE chapter. He is the recipient of the Energy Manager of the Year and the regional Energy Engineer of the Year awards, an d is a frequent spe aker at World Energy Engineering Congresses and other professional conferences. He also is a mem ber of the Ame rican Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Cond ition ing Engineer s (ASHRAE) and was on the ASHRAE SPC 135 com mi ttee that developed the ANSI/ASHRAE Standa rd 135/ 1995, BACne t (a da ta commit tee prot ocol for bu ildin g au toma tion and contro ls networ k). Viktor has publi shed numerous techn ical pap ers in vario us trade magazin es. He has also written two books, Ef ficiellt DDC Syste111s hnplenientauon, (Chilton, 1996), and DDC Applications Engineering, (CRC Press, 1998).
