FINITE ELEMENTS IN ELECTROMAGNETICS: A JUBILEE REVIEW

Abstract

This review describes the historical origins and the present state of the finite element method in electromagnetics. The foundation principles of finite elements are briefly reviewed. Applications are mainly to two and three dimensional problems of microwave and optical structures. The major types of scalar element are noted, and edge-interpolative vector elements are reviewed, firstly for the waveguide problem and then in three dimensions. An extensive bibliography is given, particularly stressing review papers. [Vol. 9, No. 2 (1994), Special Issue on The Numerical Computation of Low Frequency Electromagnetic Fields, pp 10-24]
