Abstract

Two interface models are presented using the physical considerations to analyze the free-edge effects in unidirectional multilayered composites. The first model is developed using transition spatial evolution behavior law, defined for an interlayer according to the stacking direction. It is based on a microscopic analysis of the fiber distribution in the interlayer vicinity between two layers. The numerical simulation of this model gives accurate stress distributions in the laminate, including the interlaminar stresses at the free edge which are non-singular. The second model uses an interface law, defined on material surface, resulting from the asymptotic resolution of an elastic problem pertaining to the interlayer, simulating a very thin flexible layer. This model also gives non-singular free-edge interlaminar stresses close to those obtained in the first model.
