What Is All the Fuss about Interoperability? BACnet from an End User's Perspective
Abstract
This article gives the end user guidance on the benefits and issues
surrounding interoperability, and a brief review of the histor y and the
curr ent state of technology for energy management systems. Empha sis
is placed on ho w to go about getting the right system that will gen erate
sav ings and reduce installation and maintenance costs.
The BACnetD t stan dard is relati vely new and jus t now beginning
to be specified and insta lled. This article is wri tten at a time before
BACnet ha s been fu lly integrated into the industr y and exten sively field
pro ven, although major installations! ha ve been successfully demon-
strated .
Since an energy management decision is a long-t erm c ommitm ent,
it is important for the end user to understand the impact of BACnet on
the ir current and future purchases. Otherwise, you ma y be specifying
and installing an energy management system destined for premature
obsole scence.
