Abstract

A series of numerical simulations has been carried out to investigate recirculating shallow-water flow in the wake of a conical island using the software TELEMAC-2D. This configuration is very challenging for numerical approximation because recirculating flow structures with different scales coexist in the flow. A wake instability parameter S has been used to classify the island wakes from vortex shedding at small values of S to bubble type at large values of S. The numerical results compare favourably with different experiments carried out in the same configuration.
