Abstract

Modern economy faces one of its’ greatest challenges of all times and disruptive innovations are available to corporations as solutions to major business drawbacks (e.g., traceability, communication, data exchange, information modelling etc.). The Maritime Industry combines multiple supply chain stakeholders and operations, globally, generating critical data and exchanging important documents. Mostly, these are paper-based and proprietary. For this industry, digitally exchanged data, must be unambiguous, semantically aligned between trading partners and shared with resilience in real-time using a common operational language. This could be achieved through the prominent from Bitcoin Cryptocurrency Blockchain Technology as a digital verification mechanism complying with global identification, technical and data exchange standards. Acknowledging the difficulties faced in the Maritime Business Operations’ Management, this paper examines the strategic impact of Standards and Blockchain Technology in the industry’s processes.

Author Biographies

Manos – Nikolaos Papadakis, University of Piraeus, Athens, Greece

Manos – Nikolaos Papadakis received the bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of West Attica in 2008, the master’s degree in Supply Chain and Logistics Management from the National Technical University of Athens and the University of Piraeus’ Faculty of Maritime and Industrial Sciences in 2015 and the Executive Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Piraeus’ Management and Business Administration Department in 2020. He is currently working as an Applications Executive in the GS1 AISBL Global Standards Organization Greek office. His research interests focus on Maritime Industry Digital Transformation, Maritime Operations, Corporate Strategy, Blockchain, Global Maritime Standards, Corporate Innovation Management and Implementation, Processes Re-engineering, Disruptive Technologies, Supply Chains Interoperability, Supply Chains Resilience, Sustainability and Circular Economy through Digital Innovations, Events and products traceability. He has been a digital innovation opinion leader in various conferences and round tables locally and internationally, co-author in an academic book on AIDC technologies and standards and member of various scientific institutes and organizations (PMI, Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE), Hellenic Logistics Company (EEL), Hellenic Institute of Logistics Management (ILME), Hellenic Marketing Academy and others).

Evangelia Kopanaki, University of Piraeus, Athens, Greece

Evangelia Kopanaki received the bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and the master’s degree in Computer Science from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She also received the PhD in Information Systems from the London School of Economics and Political Science, Department of Management, Information Systems and Innovation Group. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Piraeus. For more than three years, she has been a researcher at the Department of Informatics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and has been involved in various European R&D projects. She has also worked as a software analyst at a software development company in Greece. She has taught various undergraduate and postgraduate courses at the University of Piraeus, University of Athens and Singapore Institute of Management, under the University of London International Programmes. Her research interests lie in the areas of e-business, supply chain management, inter-organisational systems and web information systems. She is the author of various articles in scientific journals and has presented papers at numerous international conferences. She is also a co-author of a book on e-business and a book on web technologies.
